Paolo di Dono di Paolo alias “Uccello”

It was during the Renaissance period in Florence that Uccello (1397-1475) painted the portrait of a young man displayed at the museum and dated 1440-1450.

Not only was he a painter, but also a goldsmith and an illustrator. He was very influenced by Masaccio.
The portrait represents a young man in profile. This painting is called “Florentine portrait” and it shows the interest some artists can have for Man and more generally for the profane subjects. This choice of posture, a bust in profile, was directly influenced by the art of antique pendants.

In ancient times, the artists were drawn to an ideal of perfection where realism was less to be reached than beauty and harmony.
